Orchestral "Wind Under My Wings"

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Max Fabian Juras, Nov 25, 2018.

  1. Hi,

My submission for the Virtual Orchestration Competition in 2018.

Samples used: Cinematic Studio Strings/Orchestral String Runs, CineBrass, Hollywood Winds, VSL Winds and East West Hollywood Percussion.

So the aim was to make an orchestral track that sounded as "realistic" as possible. What do you guys think? And what can be improved?

    Thanks for listening:)

    Cheers

  2. Fun piece! Good luck with the submission, Max!

I had a bit of a struggle on the first few listens with the phrasing of the melody against its backdrop. This may have been completely intentional as it does create a bit of interest and urgency in the motion, but the result was that it felt like the phrase was continually unfinished until we hear it at about 1:28. This seems to be a combination of starting the line on a weak downbeat then giving the answering phrases a strong beat in the sixth bar of the phrase. Makes it feel to me like the phrase should be another 4 or 6 bars from there (so 9 or 11 bars total instead of 8). But like I said, the effect, while initially awkward, really grew on me over multiple listens and created a sense of urgency in the motion.

But I wanted to let you know about the first impression as well. A possible tweak to make the first pass more comfortable and cementing while keeping that urgent motion would be to adopt the line from 1:28 where you let the phrase return to the tonic without strong answering bits masking it.

Hope this helps and thanks for sharing.

  3. Thanks and glad you liked it, even though you had some thoughts. I really hear what you say and I think it is interesting but it was nothing I was thinking of. And you took the time to write it down:) thats a compliment! I have always liked writing music without thinking of periods. I am not thinking in terms like weak downbeats even though I am familiar with it. But thats just been my approach. But if you here music in that way I totally understand the dilemma, if you can say so. As I said, I really appreciate your thoughts and I am so glad for those forums out there. It is fantastic to here peoples reaction on the music you create:) Thanks man!!

    Cheers

  4. And I wouldn't recommend changing that in terms of your writing process. I only noticed the downbeat placements after transcribing and trying to articulate why my first impression was as it was.

Indeed I did enjoy it! And found it inspiring to try and get a similar uplifting and vibrant feel under my fingers. I'm not a great piano player but I found trying to transcribe your piece helpful. Keep up the great work.
